科技英語中must的譯法

英語的情態(tài)動詞有很多，其往往具有自己的詞義，但并不完全，也不能單獨作句子的謂語，需要與動詞原形連用。在此我們所討論的僅限于科技英語中使用的情態(tài)動詞must的譯法。
1. 表示義務、命令、必要性
must表示這個概念時只用在肯定句中，可譯為“必須”、“應當”等，其否定形式 是 need not。如：
* For a polvmer to be electrically conductive it must “imitate” a metal-the electrons in the bonds must be freely mobile and not bound fast to the atoms.
如果一個聚合物要導電.就必須像金屬"那樣"：成鍵電子必須能夠自由流動.而不 是與成鍵原子緊密結合。
* Care must be taken to avoid damage to the plug and stem assembly.
拆卸時應仔細，避免碰壞閥芯和閥桿組件。
應注意，must not表示禁止，可譯為“不得”、“不許”等。如：
* The steel must not contain more than 0.3% of carbon.
這種鋼的含炭量不得超過0.3%。
* Grinding defects such as burns and thermal cracks must not be in existence.
決不許有像燒傷、熱裂縫這類磨削缺陷存在。
