(1)引導(dǎo)時間狀語從句
while引導(dǎo)時間狀語從句時，其從句的位置比較靈活，可位于主句之前或之后。通常while引導(dǎo)的狀語從句的動作與主句的動作幾乎是同時發(fā)生，可譯為“當(dāng)……吋”、 “正當(dāng)……時候”、“(在）……同時”等。如：
* While people performed these tasks, their brains were observed in action by a technique called positron emission tomography (PET) scanning.
當(dāng)受試者進(jìn)行這些工作時.用一種叫做正電子放射斷層掃描的技術(shù)觀察他們的腦部活動。
* While the moon is revolving around the earth, the earth is also revolving around the sun.
在月球繞著地球旋轉(zhuǎn)的同吋.地球也在繞著太陽旋轉(zhuǎn)。
* Press the two parts together while the glue is tacky.
趁膠水還有粘性的時候，把兩部分壓合。
(2) 引導(dǎo)讓步狀語從句
while引導(dǎo)讓步狀語從句時，可譯為“雖然”、“盡管”等。如：
* While astronomers are eager to solve existing riddles about Neptune, the most exciting prospect is that Voyager 2 will find something unanticipated.
雖然天文學(xué)家渴望揭開現(xiàn)有的關(guān)于海王星之謎，但最令人振奮的前景是“旅行者2號”會發(fā)現(xiàn)ー些意想不到的東西。
* Engineering, while not a basic science, draws heavily upon the scientific disciplines when it goes to any practical field.?
雖然工程學(xué)不是ー門基礎(chǔ)科學(xué)，但是當(dāng)它應(yīng)用于任何一個實(shí)際領(lǐng)域時，都會大量地使用許多學(xué)科的知識。
(3) 引導(dǎo)原因狀語從句，相當(dāng)于since，譯為“既然”。如：
* While heat and work are convertible, the most important thing to know about any device is its efficiency.
既然熱和功可以相互轉(zhuǎn)換，那么對于任何機(jī)械要了解的最重要的問題就是它的效率。
* While fatigue is a statistical occurrence, the percent probability of failure of an antifriction bearing also must be considered.
由于疲勞是統(tǒng)計中應(yīng)考慮的事件，所以也必須考慮滾動軸承失效的百分比概率。
