why引導(dǎo)定語從句，修飾表示原因的名詞，可譯為“為什么”、“的原因”、“的緣故”等。如：
* The air resistance on an automobile is one of the reasons why fuel consumption per mile is greater at higher speeds.
空氣對汽車的阻力是為什么車速較高時每英里的耗油量較大的原因之一。
* The reason why politicians are acting so swiftly on the CFC problem may be that the threat is indisputable.
政治家們在氟里昂問題上如此迅速地釆取行動的原因也許是由于它造成的威脅是不容置疑的。
