Speech by H.E. Liu Xiaoming, Chinese Ambassador to the UK, at A Polaris String Quartet Concert in Celebration of the 70th Anniversary of the People's Republic of China: A Fusion of East and West

尊敬的上海交響樂團音樂總監(jiān)余隆先生，
尊敬的上海交響樂團團長周平女士，
女士們，先生們，朋友們：
大家晚上好！
歡迎大家出席今晚在中國大使館舉行的音樂會。首先，我謹對上海交響樂團藝術(shù)家們的到訪表示熱烈歡迎。

Good evening!
Welcome to tonight's concert at the Chinese Embassy. Let me begin by extending my warmest welcome to the musicians of Shanghai Symphony Orchestra.
2019年，無論對中國、中英關(guān)系還是上海交響樂團來說都是一個不平凡的年份。今年是中華人民共和國成立70周年，是中英建立代辦級外交關(guān)系65周年，也是上海交響樂團成立140周年。在這個承前啟后、繼往開來的重要年份，舉辦今天的音樂會具有特殊意義，傳遞了三個重要信息：
2019 is a special year for China, for China-UK relationship and for Shanghai Symphony Orchestra. It marks the 70th anniversary of the founding of the People's Republic of China. the 65th anniversary of the establishment of China-UK diplomatic relationship at the level of chargé d'affaires. and it is the 140th anniversary of the founding of Shanghai Symphony Orchestra.
This is an important year for us to review the past and look to the future. Therefore, tonight's concert has special significance. It carries three important messages:
一是“全面發(fā)展”。新中國成立以來，堅持以人民為中心的發(fā)展思想，不斷滿足人民群眾對美好生活的向往。中國在重視發(fā)展經(jīng)濟的同時，全面推進文化建設(shè)等各項事業(yè)協(xié)調(diào)發(fā)展。經(jīng)過70年的努力，中國現(xiàn)有包括上海交響樂團在內(nèi)共計1.7萬個文藝表演團體，是70年前的17.1倍。這些文藝團體為不斷豐富中國人民的文化生活，培育藝術(shù)情操，促進文化旅游業(yè)發(fā)展做出了重要貢獻。現(xiàn)在，到倫敦西區(qū)看一部音樂劇、到皇家阿爾伯特音樂廳聽一場音樂會，甚至到皇家歌劇院看一場歌劇或芭蕾舞，成為越來越多中國游客的必備“打卡項目”。
The first message is all-around development.
Since the founding of New China, China's development has been people-oriented and aimed at meeting people's aspiration for a better life. While building a strong economy, China has also pursued balanced development in all aspects including in the area of culture.
The number of art groups in China has increased more than 17 times in 70 years. China now has 17,000 art groups, and Shanghai Symphony Orchestra is one of them. These art groups have made important contribution to enriching the Chinese people's life, cultivating their taste in art, and promoting cultural and tourism industries in China.
If you ask Chinese tourists about their trip to Britain, they will probably tell you that a musical in West End, a concert at the Royal Albert Hall, or an opera or ballet at the Royal Opera House is a definite must-see in London.
