當(dāng)然，漢英成語、諺語的對譯可以使譯文地道，但也給譯文帶來了異國情調(diào)，或是與譯文民族的歷史、典故相悖，時(shí)常使讀者思維混淆不清，感覺有點(diǎn)張冠李戴而讓人莫明其妙。所以不能一味地追求譯文的“地道”，給漢語的英譯文平添上一些盎格魯撒克遜人的民族特色，結(jié)果是常常成為畫蛇添足的拙作。梁山泊英雄還是不同于羅賓漢的行俠仗義的，梁山伯與祝英臺畢竟不同于羅密歐與朱麗葉。對這類描寫還得直譯，以保持漢文化的一些民 族特色。如“易如反掌”就可直譯成 as easy as turning over one's hand (palm)，英譯文也形象易懂。這種中國英語完全來自漢譯英的翻譯實(shí)踐。下面的直譯例子經(jīng)過native speakers of English的試讀，都能被他們所理解并接受。
有眼無珠 to have eyes but not see
熟視無睹 too familiar/close to see
水中撈月 to catch the moon in the water
門可羅雀 You can catch sparrows in the doorway.
—衣帶水 only a narrow strip of water in between
因小失大 to lose the main goal because of small gains
走馬觀花 to look at the flowers while riding on horseback
欲擒故縱 to set the enemy free in order to catch him later
