在科技翻譯中，恰當(dāng)?shù)貞?yīng)用漢語成語，可以使語句簡練生動(dòng)，是提高譯文質(zhì)量的措施之一。試看以下例子：
1) Further development in instrumentation techniques is certain to be very rapid because of the increasing demand for measurement and control of physical variables in a wide variety of applications.
由于對(duì)測量和控制各種用途的物理變量的需求與日俱增，儀表制造技術(shù)一定會(huì)突飛猛進(jìn)地進(jìn)一步發(fā)展起來。
對(duì)比：由于對(duì)測量和控制各種用途的物理變量的需求越來越多，儀表制造技術(shù)一定會(huì)進(jìn)一步非?？斓匕l(fā)展起來。
2) In general, the design procedure is not straightforward and will require trial and error.
一般說來，設(shè)計(jì)過程不是一帆風(fēng)順的，而需要反復(fù)試驗(yàn)。
對(duì)比：一般說來，設(shè)計(jì)過程不是一次就能成功的，而需要反復(fù)試驗(yàn)。
從上面兩例可以看出，不用漢語成語的譯文結(jié)構(gòu)比較松散，恰當(dāng)?shù)貞?yīng)用漢語成語可使譯文簡潔生動(dòng)。
那么，在哪些情況下可以應(yīng)用漢語成語呢？
1. 原文中有成語、諺語，為了更好地保存原文的語言風(fēng)格，應(yīng)當(dāng)盡量引用相應(yīng)的漢語成語和諺語。不過，這種現(xiàn)象在科技英語中比較少見。
3) In the long run, basic knowledge and technological application go hand in hand—one helps the other.
從長遠(yuǎn)來看，基礎(chǔ)知識(shí)和技術(shù)應(yīng)用總是攜手并進(jìn)、相輔相成的。
4) At high frequencies where the integration time is short, results will be displayed in rapid succession and possibly leave insufficient time for the user to record them.
在高頻條件下，積分時(shí)間很短，答案會(huì)接二連三地顯示出來，用戶可能來不及把答案記錄下來。
2. 原文中雖然沒有成語或諺語，但是它的單詞、詞組，甚至分句的含義與漢語中某些成語相近，為了使譯文精煉，可以應(yīng)用漢語成語。
5) However, this does not mean that a management technique or approach that is successful in one society may not work with few, if any, change in another.
然而，這并不意味著，在一個(gè)社會(huì)中行之有效的管理技術(shù)或方法原封不動(dòng)或稍加修改后用于另一社會(huì)，就會(huì)不起作用。
6) Most users of a computer need to know little about computer hardware and regard the various parts of the computer as "black boxes" which do what is required of them.
大多數(shù)計(jì)算機(jī)的用戶無需了解計(jì)算機(jī)硬件，可以把計(jì)算機(jī)的各種機(jī)件看作是一些得心應(yīng)手的“黑盒”。
科技文體風(fēng)格嚴(yán)謹(jǐn)，在引用漢語成語時(shí)要考慮文體風(fēng)格的協(xié)調(diào)。
7) The mercury expands as it gets hotter and contracts as it cools so that the length of the mercury column gives a measure of the
temperature of the body with which it is in contact.
水銀會(huì)熱脹冷縮；因此，根據(jù)溫度計(jì)水銀柱的高度可以測出與溫度計(jì)相接觸的物體的溫度。
8) Roofs require special consideration to ensure adequate durability in relation to the exposure to sun and rain, and to an atmosphere sometimes heavily polluted with chemicals.
屋頂需要加以特別考慮，以確保經(jīng)受日曬雨淋和在有時(shí)被化學(xué)物質(zhì)嚴(yán)重污染的大氣中有足夠的耐久性。
3. 有時(shí)，原文中并沒有接近于成語詞句的文字表述，為要“順著原文的意思，在原文的字面之外，略加枝葉，以作扶持，使意思完整，易于理解”（陳廷枯：《英文漢譯技巧》，P.202），引用漢語成語可以收到畫龍點(diǎn)睛的效果。
9) Maxwell's electromagnetic theory would have remained just a great and incomprehensive document if other men had not studied it and gradually put it to practical use to give the world radio, radar, wireless telegraph and television.
假如其他科學(xué)家不去研究麥克斯韋的電磁理論，把它付諸實(shí)踐，為世人提供無線電、雷達(dá)、無線電報(bào)和電視的話，那么，這一理論就只能作為一份偉大而不可理解的文獻(xiàn)束之高閣了。（“束之高閣”是原文沒有的。）
在翻譯過程中要用好漢語成語，必須深刻理解原文的意義及其使用環(huán)境，還要仔細(xì)推敲，選擇恰當(dāng)?shù)臐h語成語來表達(dá)；切不可望文生義，牽強(qiáng)附會(huì)，濫用成語。
