在眾多的不定代詞中，all的用法較多，翻譯的方法也較為復(fù)雜?？傮w上來說，all表示“全體，所有”的意思，在句子中可作主語、賓語、表語、定語和同位語。代替和修飾可數(shù)名詞時，指兩個以上的人或事物，也可代替和修飾不可數(shù)名詞。
1. all后接可數(shù)名詞和不可數(shù)名詞的譯法
all后接可數(shù)名詞或不可數(shù)名詞時通常作定語，可譯為“所有的……都（均)”、 “一切……都”等。如：
* Practically, all of the heat energy received by the earth comes from the sun.
實(shí)際上.地球所得到的幾乎全部的熱能都來自于太陽。
* All of the plants or animals respire.
所有的動植物都呼吸。
2. all轉(zhuǎn)譯為副詞
在許多含有all作定語的英語句子中，all并沒有譯為漢語的定語，而是轉(zhuǎn)譯為副詞“都”、“均”等。如：
* Different kinds of petroleum are all mixtures of hydrocarbons.
各種石油產(chǎn)品都是烴混合物。
* All electrical switches for lighting and accessories are located at the right side of the pilot control wheel.
照明及附件的開關(guān)均在駕駛操縱手輪的右側(cè)。
* All locknuts are provided with a supplementary lubricant.
自鎖螺母均供給附加的潤滑劑。
3. all作主語或賓語時的譯法
當(dāng)all在原文句子中作主語或賓語時，漢譯時一般多采用還原法，將all翻譯為所代替的名詞。如：
* It is known to all that mathematics is the basis of all other sciences.
大家都知道，數(shù)學(xué)是所有其他科學(xué)的基礎(chǔ)。
* In times past all were alive with volcanoes and earthquakes and, along with other bodies in our system, were cratered by meteorites.
在過去漫長的歲月里，這四顆行星上火山和地震活動頻繁，和太陽系的其他天體一 樣，形成很多隕石坑。（根據(jù)上下文.將不定代詞all還原譯為“這四顆行星”)
