4. 雙重否定
英語表示雙重否定的句子一般可以譯成漢語的雙重否定式，但有些譯成肯定式較好，例如：
 (1)譯成雙重否定式：
Without coke iron cannot be smelted.
沒有焦炭就不能煉鐵。
But for your help，I would not have made such good progress in my studies.
沒有你的幫助，我不會(huì)在學(xué)習(xí)上取得這么大的進(jìn)步。
If there were no energy，there would be no force and no work.
沒有能量，就不會(huì)有力和功。

 (2)譯成肯定式：
Energy is nothing but the capacity to do work.
能量就是做功的能力。
They never work without helping each other.
他們工作時(shí)總是互相幫助。
It is none other than zinc,
這就是鋅。

5. 表示否定的習(xí)慣用語
英語中有不少表示否定的習(xí)用短語，其中有些詞的原義并無否定的意思，但和別的詞搭配在一起，就可以用來表示否定。這種習(xí)慣用語有動(dòng)詞短語，形容詞短語，副詞短語，介詞短語等好多種，遇到時(shí)要多查辭典，以免誤譯。例如：
This equation is far from being complicated.
這個(gè)方程式一點(diǎn)也不復(fù)雜。
This lake is free of ice in the winter,
這個(gè)湖冬天不結(jié)冰。
I am quite in the dark about the matter.
這件事我一點(diǎn)也不知道。
We gave him some good advice. but he made light of it.
我們給他忠告，但他不當(dāng)一回事。
He made little of his illness.
他認(rèn)為自己的病無關(guān)緊要。

6. 表示否定的特殊結(jié)構(gòu)
英語中還有一些表示否定的特殊結(jié)構(gòu)，如“too…to…”，“not (no)…until...”，“not (no)…

unless…”等，翻譯時(shí)要注意，例如：
(1)too…to…太......（以致）不能……
Farad is too large a unit to be used in radio calculation.
法拉這單位太大，在無線電計(jì)算中不便采用。
Gasoline is too volatile to be kept in an open vessel.
汽油太易揮發(fā)，不能裝在敞口容器中。
The change is too little to be observed.
變化太小，觀察不出。
(2)not (no) …unless，not (no)…until...
不……不……（相當(dāng)于雙重否定）
Don't open the door until the train stops.
火車未停不要開門。
The path is not complete until the wires are joined.
沒有導(dǎo)線連接，電路就不完整.
