以上兩者均有驗(yàn)尸人員之含義。coroner源于英格蘭，指一公共官員，其可為醫(yī)生、律師或其他司法人員，對(duì)因暴力或有疑義之突然死亡原因進(jìn)行調(diào)查（whose duty is to investigate the causes and circumstances of any death that occurs suddenly, suspiciously ,or violently)，以往幾乎所有的詞典均將coroner譯為“驗(yàn)尸官”[1]，此種翻譯很不準(zhǔn)確。首先，驗(yàn)尸必定包括解剖尸體等，其必定是法醫(yī)或至少是醫(yī)生的職責(zé)，但coroner多不是醫(yī)生；其次，coroner的責(zé)任也決非只是檢驗(yàn)尸體[2]。故筆者建議將其譯為“死因調(diào)查員”（香港將其譯為“死因裁判官”[3])，與其相應(yīng)的coroner's court 也就應(yīng)為“死因調(diào)查法庭”而非以往的“驗(yàn)尸官法庭”。medical examiner也為公共官員，負(fù)責(zé)對(duì)有疑點(diǎn)的死亡原因進(jìn)行調(diào)查，包括決定是否必要和進(jìn)行尸檢等，故其才是“驗(yàn)尸體官”[4]，美國(guó)很多州現(xiàn)已用后者替代了前者[5]。
