英語中有一種集體名詞，表示一類人或事物的集合體。它們的單復(fù)數(shù)含義是不同的，因此也很易誤譯。試舉一例：
The committee are walking into the meetingplace and taking their seat.
[原譯]委員會正步入會場就座。
[改譯]委員會的委員們正步入會場就座。
[說明] committee 是一個集體名詞，既可作單數(shù)名詞，也可作復(fù)數(shù)名詞。用作單數(shù)名詞時指“委員會”，用作復(fù)數(shù)名詞時指“委員會”這一集體的成員們。本例中謂語動詞用的是復(fù)數(shù)應(yīng)指“委員們”從邏輯上來說也是如此。
類似的集體名詞還有family(家庭）,audience(聽眾，觀眾），class(班級）,crowd(人群），public(公眾），staff(全體工作人員），personnel (全體人員）,army(大軍，大群）等。此外,majority（大多數(shù)），（a) number(of) ，(a) group (of)，(a) series (of), (a) total (of)等名詞也可根據(jù)具體情況用作單數(shù)或復(fù)數(shù)。
舉例如下：
1. The committee comprised of 12 members is also known as the joint committee.
這個由12名委員組成的委員會也稱為聯(lián)合委員會。
2. His family has moved to the city.
他的家已搬到城里去了.
3. The patient's family have agreed on the date or surgery.
病人的家屬已同意手術(shù)的日期。
4. The public is (are) requested not to spit.
要求公眾勿隨地吐痰。
5. Our class is a small one.
我們的班級是個小班。
6. The whole class are listening to the teacher attentively.
全班同學(xué)都在注意地聽教師講課。
7. The majority were (was) for Dr Smith.
大多數(shù)人支持Smith醫(yī)生的意見。
8. The majority of adults obtain little or no relief from antihistamines, particularly if attacks are severe, but they may prove helpful in children.
對大多數(shù)成人來說，抗組胺藥物幾乎起不到或完全沒有減輕癥狀的作用(特別在嚴重發(fā)作的情況下），但對兒童卻可能有效。
9. A large group of antibiotics is produced by Streptomyces.
一大類抗生素是由鏈霉菌屬制成的。
10. A large group of chemotherapeutic agents are the sulfonamide compounds used against a number of disease organisms.
一大批化療藥物是用于抑制多種病菌的磺胺類化合物。
11. The condition is especially likely to occur in those in whom a number of teeth are missing, thus making chewing difficult.
