(1) dispense with sb./sth. 用不著某人/某事；擺脫某人/某事
1. The patient's recovery has reached a point where the doctor's services can be dispensed with.
病人的恢復(fù)已進入無需醫(yī)生護理的時期。
2. The new machine dispenses with hand-labour.
新機器省去手工勞動。
3. I suggest we dispense with formality and proceed with our discussions on an informal basis.
我建議免除俗套，不拘形式地繼續(xù)進行我們的討論。
(2) at one's/sb.'s disposal 供任意使用；可自行支配
1. Students have a well-stocked library at their disposal.
學(xué)生有個藏書豐富的圖書館，非常方便。
2. The firm put a secretary at my disposal.
公司給我配備了一名秘書。
(3) like a dose of salts 很快；一下子
He gets through his pay like a dose of salts, and by Monday he's broke.
一發(fā)工資，他就很快花個精光，到了星期一便身無分文了。
(4) in double harness 兩人一起；夫妻一起
1. The brothers work in double harness.
哥兒倆一起工作。
2. John and Mary seem to get along very well in double harness.

(5) double back 原路折回（尤指始料未及者）
1. The road ahead was flooded so we had to double back.
前面的路已遭水淹，我們只好原路折回。
2. The fox doubled back and escaped the hounds.

(6) double up (on sth./with sb.) 共用
1. We've only one rom left: you'll have to double up with Peter.

2. There's enough corned beef to go round, but you'll have to double up on the baked beans.

(7) beyond a/any doubt; beyond all (possible) doubt 無疑地
1. She was beyond all doubt the finest ballerins of her day.

(8) be down to sb. 依賴、依靠或依仗某人

(9) be down to sth. 只剩一點兒 （錢）
I'm afraid I can't buy you a drink --- I'm down to my last 50p.
很抱歉，我不能請你喝什么了 —— 我只剩下50便士了。
(10) down and out 無家、無錢等；窮困潦倒
1. He looked completely down and out.
他看上去已窮困潦倒。
2. After about ten years of casual work or none at all, they are practically down end out.
在過去的十年里，他們不是偶爾做點零工，就是完全失業(yè)，現(xiàn)在簡直窮困潦倒極了。
